MAYOR Del de Guzman of Marikina is inviting commercial basketball clubs of companies, cities and provinces to participate in the First DELeague open invitational basketball tournament to be held at the Marikina Sports Park (MSP) from October to December this year.
At stake is a total of P200,000 worth of cash prizes — P100,000 for the Champion, P50, 000 for 2nd runner-up, P25,000 for 3rd Place, and P 10,000 for 4th Place.
This early, 11 teams have already confirmed participation in this maiden tournament. They are the Philippine Army, Hobe Bihon, Wangs Ball Club, Sea Lion-PCU, BBJ Construction, Congre 1, Invest Well (D League), San Jose- Antipolo Selection, Team Of Kiko Adriano, MBL Selection by Elvies Tolentino, and Marikina Selection.
The participation of former PBA players, namely Nelson Asaytono, Paul Alvarez, Biboy Simon, Kiko Adriano, Marlon Basco, Banjo Calpito and Chad Alonzo will add spice to this exciting league.
Sonny Manucat III, DELeague commissioner, is optimistic that the games will attract thousands of avid basketball aficionados from Marikina, Quezon City, Cainta, Pasig, Antipolo, San Mateo and Montalban. He also expects spectators from the provinces to actively support their respective teams.
The games will be played every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 7-10 in the evening.
All teams can submit a lineup of 18 players, with 15 players to play every game. A meeting will also be called to discuss the rules and regulations of the tournament upon confirmation of participating teams.
DELeague is organized by the Del Sports Group headed by Kap. Odi Francisco of Concepcion Uno with councilors Mark del Rosario, Frankie Ayuson, Mario de Leon, Domeng dela Paz, MSP sports administrator Dr. Totoy Llabres, and Public Information Office chief Paul Edward P. Sison as officers of the Executive Committee.
The 1st DELeague aims to contribute to the promotion of Marikina as The Sports Capital of the Philippines while giving commercial teams, cities, and provinces an opportunity to promote their brand and products.
