Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman invites everyone to join the upcoming DEL Run (Marikina Marathon) on April 22, Sunday, 5am, at the Marikina Sports Park (MSP).
The DEL Run (Marikina Marathon) is a fun run open to all which is aimed at gathering funds to plant tree seedlings in the Marikina Watershed.
According to Gil Munar, Committee Head of the DEL Run, the organizers committed 10 trees to be planted in the Marikina Watershed for every registered runner. The fun run aims to gather 5,000 runners equivalent to 50,000 tree seedlings planted in 20 hectares of land within a protected area in Rizal province.
“We are inviting everyone to join as this marathon does not only promote good health to the runners but it will also benefit the Marikina Watershed which is the city’s first line of defense every time rain falls. Joining the marathon will surely save many lives from floods,” De Guzman said.
There are three different categories in the fun run which are 5K, 10K, and 21K. The categories shall also be divided into Male and Female Divisions. Cash prizes shall be awarded to the runners first to complete each category.
In the 21K category, first placer shall receive PhP10,000; second- PhP7,000; and third- PhP5,000. For the 10K category, first place- PhP5,000; second- PhP3,000; and third- PhP2,000. While for the 5K, first place- PhP3,000; second- PhP2,000; and third- PhP1,000.
There are also special awards to be given away like PhP1,000 each for the first below 10 years of age to finish the 5K and 10K race. Meanwhile, PhP1,000 shall also be given to the first 60 years old and above to finish the 21K race.
The route for the 5K run would start at the Marikina Sports Park going to Sumulong, then to the banks of the Marikina River, and back to MSP. For the 10K run, from MSP, runners will go to Sumulong, to the banks of the Marikina River, going to Barangay Tumana, Barangay Malanday, then back to MSP.
Meanwhile, the route for the 21K run will start at MSP, going to Sumulong, then to the banks of Marikina River, going to Barangay Tumana, running along J.P. Rizal Street to Bayan-Bayanan, Barangay Marikina Heights, Kalayaan Avenue, Sumulong, and finally heading back to MSP.
Registration is ongoing. Booths shall be available in SM Marikina, Graceland Mall Plaza, Marikina Puregold branches, Marikina Sports Park, and the Labor Relations and Public Employment Service Office.
The registration fee for the 5K and 10K run is PhP400 while for the 21K run is PhP500. A singlet shall also be given upon registration.
The DEL Run is spearheaded by the city government of Marikina in cooperation with the Rotary Club Zone of Marikina and Department of Environment and Natural Resources. It is supported by Meralco, SM Marikina, Manila Water, Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corporation, Arms Corporation, Delfi Foods, Puregold, and Millex Construction.
