THE CITY government of Marikina will launch the “Liga Marikina 2012 Inter-Barangay Sports Festival” on Sunday, April 1, 5:30 p.m., at the Marikina Sports Park.
The Liga Marikina is a sports event aimed at discovering new sports talents at the barangay level. In the said Liga, athletes from the 16 barangays of the city will compete in various sports events.First batch of sports in the Liga Marikina are Basketball (elimination rounds to be held at Tambay Kay Lim Court); Volleyball (at San Roque Gym); Badminton (at the Marikina Sports Park); and Chess (at Parang Pavillion).The said sports are divided into several divisions: Basketball (girls, midgets, juniors, seniors); Volleyball (boys, girls); Badminton (men’s double, women’s double, mix double); and Chess (mix of boys and girls).”The Liga Marikina also promotes the importance of sports in leading long, quality, and healthy lives for all Marikeños,” Mayor Del De Guzman said.It is expected that 1,632 athletes will participate in the first batch of sports in the Liga Marikina where 768 players are for basketball, 384 players for volleyball, 384 players for badminton, and 96 players for chess.
More sports will be added after March. The said Liga will last until the end of May and all final competitions will be held at the Marikina Sports Park.
“Tournaments like this are very beneficial to the youth as it enables them to stay fit and productive, to harness their skills, and prevents them from getting involved with bad vices. It likewise fosters camaraderie and sportsmanship among our residents,” De Guzman added.
The Liga Marikina 2012 Inter-Barangay Sports Festival is spearheaded by its Organizing Committee led by Chairman Rudy Francisco, Sports Director Sonny Manucat III, Administrative Officer Monroe Cueson, and Event Organizer Norman Afable.
