Marikina City hosts Olympic Day Celebration

Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman thanked the Philippine Sports Commission for making Marikina Sports Park the venue of the recently held Olympic Day Celebration, which is held for the Filipino athletes competing in the upcoming London 2012 Olympics.

The Olympic Day Celebration marks the beginning of the Filipino athletes’ fight for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London this July. It is spearheaded by the Philippine Sports Commission which also aims to recognize the talents and skills of Filipino athletes.

The activity was attended by 300 athletes from the National Sports Association and Marikina Sports Association as well as 1,500 students from Sta. Elena High School, Sto Niño Elementary School, and Malanday National High School.

“This is our simple way of giving them strength and showing them that the city of Marikina as a whole supports them in their upcoming fight in the London 2012 Olympics,” De Guzman said.

Moreover, according to De Guzman, the said Olympic Day Celebration was also a way to encourage young students in Marikina to play and get involved into sports.

The students were taught by the Filipino athletes different kinds of sports like Table Tennis, Soft Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Boxing, Taekwondo, Gymnastics, Badminton, Arnis, Water Polo, Volleyball, Karatedo, Sepak Takraw, and many more.

“Marikina city is continuously promoting the good benefits of sports to its residents. This does not only help them stay physically fit but it also helps them stay away from bad vices as they are being preoccupied with worthwhile activities,” De Guzman added.
