De Guzman’s statement was made after Leonard Jose Bacani, 35, married, businessman, and a resident of SSS Village, Brgy. Concepcion Dos, Marikina City was killed. Bacani was the owner of the car which his customer rented and attempted to steal but eventually used by the suspect to kill him in the chase.
“Please take extra caution when dealing with transactions like this because criminals disguised as ordinary persons are taking advantage of the opportunities. It is advisable to ask for pertinent documents like identification cards and Police Clearance, as well as document (photo or video) the transaction process just like what Bacani did. If possible, conduct a background check before closing any transaction. This measure can ensure our safety especially now that the summer season is drawing near and there will be vacations and out-of-town trips and car rentals will be on high demand,” De Guzman said.
Although the crime involving Bacani was committed outside Marikina, De Guzman hopes it will be solved in the soonest possible time.
“We trust the capability of the authorities of Mendez, Cavite in giving justice to our fellow Marikenyo. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to his bereaved family,” De Guzman added.
De Guzman likewise instructed Marikina Police Station headed by PS Supt Vincent Calanoga to feed him regular updates on the development of the case.
