Marikina joins Metro Shake

SHAKE

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA)-organized Metro-wide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (MSED) dubbed “Metro Shake” will be held all over the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, July 30 starting at 10:30 in the morning. Marikina City, being part of the NCR, will have its share of the drill.

The Marikina City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MCDRRMO) is preparing for the event which will be participated in by all of the city’s 16 barangays, 32 public schools, select private schools, business establishments, and government establishments like Marikina City Hall, Healthy City Center, and Amang Rodriguez Medical Center.

At 10:30 a.m., all Marikeños are expected to do the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” drill, act according to appropriate conduct before, during, and after an earthquake, and practice familiarization of their respective evacuation sites. To further improve simulation exercises, barangay officials will conduct scenarios mimicking clearing of debris, response to persons trapped inside a structure, fires, and the likes.

The main activity for the event is the Scenario 3 which is assigned to Marikina City. In Scenario 3, authorities shall simulate the collapse of a bridge located along Marcos Highway (at the west bank of Marikina River near Marcos Bridge and FVR Road). There will be Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) in the simulated rescue operation that will be led by MMDA, Marikina’s own Rescue 161, and Philippine Red Cross.

Marikina City’s performance during the drill will be evaluated by authorities from the Department of Education, PNP Marikina, BFP Marikina, Philippine Red Cross Marikina Chapter, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, the Magdalo, Marikina Settlements Office, and Marikina City’s Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) Team.

Some roads in the city that will be utilized as evacuation centers will also be closed. Some 40 personnel from the Traffic Management and Enforcement Division (TMED) will be deployed to help ease the flow of traffic in the city’s major thoroughfares. Several roads that are expected to be affected by the drill are J.P. Rizal St. corner W. Paz St., Shoe Ave. corner W. Paz St., J.P. Rizal corner V. Santos St., E. Gonzales St. corner J.P. Rizal St., Cirma St., FVR Road (going to Riverbanks Center), Lopez Jaena St., and Don Gonzalo Puyat St. (front of Loyola Memorial Park).

The cities of Marikina and Pasig are designated as the Eastern Sector in the said drill. The same designation will be used in an actual earthquake occurrence. According to MCDRRMO, in an actual massive earthquake occurrence, the Emergency Operating Center (EOC) for these two cities would be located at the LRT-2 Santolan Station where the boundaries of these two cities meet. This EOC would serve as the forward command post of national government agencies such as the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The Metro Manila Development Authority organizes the Metro Shake in preparation for a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that would be made possible by the West Valley Fault. The 100-kilometer fault runs through 42 barangays in Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Muntinlupa, and 30 barangays in Bulacan, Laguna and Cavite.

Mega Job Fair in Marikina

Mega Job Fair

An annual job fair will be held in Marikina City on Friday, July 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Old Lobby of the Marikina Sports Center.

Aimed at increasing the number of employed Marikeños through this event dubbed “Mega Job Fair 2015”, the city government through Labor Relations and Public Employment Service Office (LRPESO) taps some 50 private local companies and 10 international companies to offer slots in the said fair.

Interested job applicants must be at least 18 years of age, at least high school graduate and must bring copies of their resume or bio data during the event.

According to LRPESO, there will be slots for office, accounting, business process outsourcing, customer service, and technical support personnel.

“It is noteworthy that there are many jobs to be offered in the fair. The job locations would be concentrated in Metro Manila such as in Makati City and Quezon City. We will also accommodate an unlimited number of applicants so it is better for them to come on time,” said Mayor Del De Guzman.

Meanwhile, those who will miss the opportunity can still have their chance at another Mega Job Fair which the city government will hold on October 16, Friday, at the Old Lobby of the Marikina Sports Center.
