Several types of firecrackers were confiscated in the past several days and are scheduled to be disposed today, January 5. This is in accordance with City Ordinance No. 27, Series of 2008 which prohibits the manufacture and sale of firecrackers, pyrotechnic devices and other similar devices and explosives in the territory of Marikina City.
The confiscated items were drenched in drums of water by the Office of Public Safety and Security (OPSS) at an open space fronting the Marikina City Hall. After drenching in water, they are to be turned over to the City Environmental Management Office (CEMO) for proper disposal. Among the illegal firecrackers seized were 81 pcs. and five bundles of Kwitis; one Sixteen Shot; 76 pcs. Fountain; one Helicopter; 310 pcs. and 393 bundles of Luces; 49 pcs. and two boxes of Judas Belt; 60 pcs. and one pack, and 70 boxes of Five Star; 109 pcs. of Whistle Bomb; three pcs. of Boga; one piece Sawa; at several boxes of Piccolo.
According to the Philippine National Police-Marikina, the city had a firecracker-related injury count of 32, while one person was hit by a stray bullet in Brgy. Malanday while celebrating the New Year.
